Calico Ghost Town Day Tour from Los Angeles offers fun and exciting way to learn about California Gold and Silver Rush era and American Wild West.

Have you ever wanted to amble down the same streets where some of American Westerns were made? You can do this during the Calico Ghost Town - Old Western Town day tour.

Overview

The tour begins at your hotel in Los Angeles Area. Our tour guide will pick you at 10 am from your hotel or address. On the way you will enjoy local San Bernardino Mountains views.

Calico Ghost old west mining town located within 2 hour drive in a High Desert area of San Bernardino county that has been around since 1881 during the largest silver strike in California. With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver ore over a 12-year span. When silver lost its value in the mid 1890's Calico lost its population. The miners packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living. It became a "ghost" town.

Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950's architecturally restoring all but the 5 original building to look at as they did in the 1880's. Calico received State historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's Silver Rush Ghost Town. Numerous Western movies were filmed over the years at Calico Ghost Town: Cowboy Chinamen, Five Grand, The Hitcher, the Prowler, Ghost Ship and others.

Tourist guests will have about three hours to stroll a historical town, visit old silver mine, ride in old rail car and perhaps experience some paranormal activity. Have a wonderful lunch at one of the old Western Calico House Tavern (lunch is not included). After lunch return journey back.

What to Expect

Kids and adults will have fun time to learn about history of silver mining and explore Ghost Town attractions: old silver Maggie Mine (extra $2-$3.50/person) Mystery Shack, Gold Panning Adventure (extra $3/person) and have a ride on old Odessa Rail Road (extra $4/person).

The Maggie Mine was a working silver mine in the 1880s and is now the only mine that is safe for guests to experience. Your 1000 foot self-guided tour will begin with a blacklight display that shows some of the minerals in the local rocks. Then you will continue down the mine drift where you will see and hear the history of the mine and learn how the miners worked in the local Calico mountains. Approximate Time to complete: 10-15 minutes

On your guided tour through the famous Calico Mystery Shack you will experience amazing feats and confusing sights. Have you ever seen water run uphill? How about a broom stand by itself?Hear the story of why Harry Dover build this shack. Experience the fun and laughter that lasts for generations in the Mystery Shack

During Gold Panning Adventure learn and experience first hand how the miners of yesterday and today pan for gold in a stream. During your adventure you will walk away with your own riches of Fool's Gold or more technically known-Iron Pyrite. No one goes away empty handed. You can even take your treasure home in a Calico Ghost Town souvenir glass vial. Adventure lasts about 5-10 minutes

The Calico Odessa Railroad was installed in town in 1958 and has been running on a regular basis since then. The tour lasts approximately 8 minutes and takes you on a trip around the hill to see some historical sites, mining equipment and hear some interesting historical points.
